How to Be More Humble

Have you come to the realization that you need to be more humble in life?

Ours is not a humble era. The spirit of the age is a spirit of progress, success, making a show, self promotion, demonstrating how much better than others you are (whatever ‘better’ means).

Our culture rewards the show-offs, the manifestly brilliant, and even the merely famous. People still pay lip service to the idea of modesty, but it is often a false humility – just something else to show off about.

So why would anyone consider trying to be more humble? Isn’t the very idea moralistic and decidedly old-fashioned?

Has being humble gone out of fashion?

It certainly is old-fashioned. Spiritual traditions across the world have pointed to the spiritual benefits to be drawn from humility for many centuries. ‘False’ humility is not a new phenomenon either. Appearing modest and self-effacing has often been socially useful.

Admonishing others to practice more humility does risk being seen as moralistic. On the whole, people do not take kindly to being told to ‘be a better person’, even though we all have a strong natural drive to see ourselves, inwardly, as a good person.

But we don’t like being told to be good. If we’re going to be ‘good’, we’ll do it by ourselves, thank you very much.

However, even when you leave ‘spiritual benefits’ out of it, and set aside moral injunctions from others, there are still good reasons to seek to nurture more modesty in ourselves.

The benefits of humility

Because humility (the real kind) is genuinely good for you.

Genuine humility is really a kind of deep honesty. A truly modest person sees themselves more clearly. They don’t puff themselves up, or put themselves down. They take pride in their accomplishments.

But they do not allow this to inflate their self-importance. This means they can get along better with others, can acknowledge their weaknesses, can accept advice, and can avoid the worst pitfalls of blinkered certainty.

And – best of all – this kind of honesty saves you from the awful burden of having to keep up a front. If you have a certain ‘image’ in the world (and let’s face it, our society practically insists you must have such an image), your life can start to revolve around maintaining that ‘image’ – regardless of what you really need or really want. This pressure has been known to wreck many lives.
